Newberry Students Explore Career Opportunities at Samsung with Superintendent Weaver
NEWBERRY, S.C. — Newberry County Career Center students gained a firsthand look at careers in advanced manufacturing during a visit to Samsung’s Newberry facility in recognition of National Manufacturing Day.
Students toured the facility, learned about Samsung’s manufacturing operations, and explored the skills, training, and career opportunities associated with modern manufacturing. The experience provided students an opportunity to connect what they are learning in their Career Center programs with potential pathways available within their own community.
South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver joined students for the tour, highlighting the connection between education, career preparation, and workforce development across South Carolina. Weaver spent time with students during the visit as they learned more about the facility and the opportunities available in the manufacturing industry.
The visit also reflects the School District of Newberry County’s commitment to developing strong partnerships with local businesses and industries. Through these connections, students are exposed to career possibilities while local employers have an opportunity to engage with the next generation of South Carolina’s workforce.
“Industry tours like this are an important part of our mission at Newberry County Career Center,” NCCC Director Jennifer Holliday said. “They allow students to see firsthand how the technical skills, employability skills, and industry credentials they are developing connect to real careers and opportunities within our community. Experiences like these help students explore career pathways, make meaningful connections with industry professionals, and better understand what it means to be career ready.”
Holliday also emphasized the significance of having the state superintendent participate alongside students.
“We were also honored to have South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver join our students on the tour and share in this valuable learning experience,” Holliday said.
Students at the Newberry County Career Center have opportunities to develop advanced technical and employability skills, gain hands-on experience, and earn industry-recognized credentials. These experiences are designed to prepare Career Center completers for multiple pathways following graduation, including college, additional training, and direct entry into the workforce.
Partnerships with companies such as Samsung strengthen those efforts by bringing education and industry together and giving students opportunities to see how their classroom and laboratory experiences translate into careers close to home.
“At NCCC, we are committed to connecting education, industry, and opportunity as we prepare students for what’s next,” Holliday said. “Mission Ready. Career Ready. Future Ready.”
