NEWBERRY HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT PARTICIPATION POLICIES
*Participation in graduation is a privilege that can be revoked by administration. Please read these policies carefully and understand that all students are expected to abide by the expectations throughout the school year.
*Students must successfully complete all courses required for the diploma.
*Students must pay ALL fees prior to commencement.
*Students who are unable to order their graduation supplies from Rhodes Graduation will not be allowed to participate in commencement.
*Seniors are required to attend the graduation practice the day prior to graduation.
*Seniors are expected to abide by the NHS commencement dress code for all events.
*No cell phones are allowed during the commencement ceremonies.
*Only Newberry School District approved/issued cords and stoles may be worn. There will be a strict dress code check and extra items will be confiscated and not returned. Any addition made after the dress code check will result in administrative action.
*No decorations of any kind will be allowed on caps or gowns.
*Any disruption made to the commencement ceremony by members of the senior class will result in a delay in the awarding of the diploma. Students who disrupt the ceremony will not receive their diploma the day of the ceremony; students will have to return to school during the summer to meet with administration. Disruptions include inappropriate behavior for a formal event, dress code violations, cell phone violations, etc.
IMPORTANT DATES FOR THE CLASS OF 2025
*Tuesday, April 1st: Senior Meeting – 11 a.m. (NHS Theater) – You must pay your balance to get your supplies!
*Friday, April 11th: Cap & Gown Group Picture – 11:15 a.m. (NHS Gymnasium) – Wear your cap & gown. Gentlemen should wear a white shirt and black tie. Ladies should wear black shoes.
*Friday, May 2nd: Final due date for senior slideshow pictures – submit to Ms. Hartness at dhartness@sdnc.org.
*May 12th – May 14th: Senior Celebration Activities.
*Tuesday, May 13th: Senior Night – 6 p.m. (NHS Theater) – Wear a NICE school-appropriate outfit. No jeans and no hats.
*Sunday, May 18th: Community Baccalaureate – 3 p.m. (Wiles Chapel) – Wear your cap & gown with the required attire beneath it.
*Friday, May 16th: All senior fees must be paid in FULL – see Mrs. Compton in the main office.
Wednesday, May 21st: Elementary School Walk – 8:15 a.m. – ARRIVE by 8 a.m. in your cap & gown at the elementary school you attended.
*Wednesday, May 21st: Graduation Practice – 10:00 a.m. (NHS Gymnasium/Mike Ware Field) – ARRIVE by 9:45. Report to the gym and find your assigned seat. Wear casual, comfortable, school-appropriate clothing.
*Thursday, May 22nd: Commencement Exercises – 8:00 a.m. (Mike Ware Field) – Report to the gym by 7:00 a.m.
WARNING! If you do not attend graduation practice the day before graduation, you WILL NOT be allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony. All fees must be paid in order to participate in the ceremony.
Gates will be open to guests from 7:00 to 7:45 a.m. No guests will be seated after the start of the ceremony.
PLEASE BE EARLY.
IMPORTANT DRESS CODE INFORMATION
YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE ACTIVITIES IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY EXACTLY WITH THE DRESS CODE AS IT IS STATED BELOW.
CAP AND GOWN ATTIRE FOR PICTURES AND COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES
All students will wear their graduation cap and gowns for these events. You must wear the following under your cap and gown:
Females: Church dress that complies with the school dress code; BLACK dress shoes (NO FLIP FLOPS, TENNIS SHOES, VANS, SLIDES, ETC.); do not wear the white collar that comes with the robe.
Males: Dark navy or black dress slacks (NO JEANS OR KHAKIS); white button-down dress shirt; dark, navy, or black PLAIN tie; black dress shoes; dark socks (NO FLIP FLOPS OR TENNIS SHOES).
If you have dress code questions or concerns, you should contact the main office or Ms. Hartness immediately.
TICKETS
Tickets are given to students at the end of graduation practice. Students must sign to receive them at practice. We will not know the exact number of tickets until closer to the graduation ceremony.
